Jalaja was active during 80's and 90's in Malayalam Cinema and this wonderful actress capable of portraying any type of roles excelled in tragic roles as well.She appeared in several films of critical acclaim.She has acted in protagonist/supporting female roles of several artistic/parallel films of genius directors like 'Adoor Gopalakrishnan,G.Aravindan,Lenin Rajendran,K.G.George,P.padmarajan.P.Hari Kumar,Bharathan' etc and also acted in mainstream films and commercial films of directors like 'Sasi Kumar,A.B.Raj,I.V.Sasi,Joshi' and many more.
Regarding the costumes and the character of the roles she always selected dignified roles only which did not affect her reputation.
Jalaja was born to Professor Thakazhiyil Vasudevan Pillai and Saraswathi Amma at Malaysia.She studied up to her 4th grade there and afterwards migrated to India and continued her studies in India.Her College studies was at St.Josephs College Alapuzha and at Thiruvananthapuram Women's College.She is a Post-Graduate in English Literature.
Her debut into Malayalam Cinema was with G.Aravindan's 'Thambu' which narrated the life of Circus artistes in 1978.In the same year she acted along with Shobha and Anupama in the film 'Randu Penkuttikal' which was based partially on the novel in the same title written by novelist V.T.Nandakumar.The film which was directed by Mohan earned critics and viewers acclaim.
She was in supporting role of 'Ulkkadal' directed by K.G.George in 1979 in which Venu Nagavally and Shobha acted in main roles.
She was in the title role of 'Radha Enna Penkutty' which told the story of a girl who sacrificed her life for the welfare of her family and the film was directed by Balachandra Menon.
She was the heroine of 'Vilkkanundu Swapnangal'(80) which was Mammootty's first noted film.Sukumaran,Sudheer,Balan K Nair etc acted in it.
Her films 'Venal' adirected by Lenin Rajendran in 81 and 'Ambalpoovu' directed by Harikumar in 81 earned her accolades.For acting in Venal she received Kerala State Best actress award and Filmfare Best actress Award.
'Elipathayam'(Rat trap) directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan earned her much accolades.The film earned several awards at National and International levels.Karamana Janardhanan Nair was the male lead of this film.
'Yavanika' of K.G.George boosted her acting career to great heights.That film which was a super hit earned much appreciation for her as well as other actors,Bharat Gopi,Asokan,Thilakan,Nedumudi Venu,Venu Nagavally etc also.
In 1982 'Marmaram' directed by Bharathan earned appreciation.
She was the heroine of a comedy film 'Mandanmar Londonil' which was shot at London by director Sathyan Anthikkad in 1983.
The film 'Aalkoottathil Thaniye' was a super-hit film of 1984 which was directed by I.V.Sasi.The children and close relatives of an old man expecting his death to grab his wealth was the theme of the film.
'Desadana Kili Karayarilla' was a well noted film written and directed by P.Padmarajan in 1986.Two girls elopes from a school excursion team and their bitter experiences was the theme of the film.Shari,Karthika,Jalaja,Jagathy etc acted.
In the film 'Sarvakalasala' directed by Venu Nagavally she acted as Sr.Alphonsa.
In the debut film of Jayaram as the hero 'Aparan' directed by P.Padmarajan in 1988 Jalaja has acted along with Mukesh,Sukumari,M.G.Soman,Innocent etc.
She is married to Prakash Nair on 3 September 1993 and is settled in Bahrain.They have a daughter 'Devi'.Jalaja was one of the Jury member of Kerala State Film Awards 2014.
Jalaja is recipient of Kerala State Best Actress Film Award for the film 'Venal' in 1981.In the same year she received Filmfare Best Actress Award for 'Venal'.
