SUMITA SANYAL

Sumita Sanyal is primarily an accomplished Bengali actress who has acted in a few unmemorable Hindi films also.
Her portrayals of the characters in films like 'Anand'(70), Ashirwad(68) etc received critical acclaim and  audience approval as 'excellent'.
Sumita Sanyal was born as 'Manjula Sanyal' on October 9, 1945 in Darjeeling.
In 1960 she entered in to film industry by acting in a Bengali film by the introduction by film artiste Leela Desai.She later acted in several Bengali films  and in films of eminent directors like Satyajit Ray,Tapan Sinha etc also.
She was married to film editor Subodh Roy.
She has acted in  TV serials and on professional stages  and she  has association with the group 'Ranga Sabha'.
Her Benagli film 'Sagina Mahato' earned wide appreciation in which Dilip Kumar was the hero.
'Apanjan' was a Bengali film directed by Tapan Sinha which won National film award as Best feature film in Bengali  and was a commercial success also.Chhaya Devi was the heroine of this film in which Sumita Sanyal acted in supporting role.This film was remade in Hindi as 'Mere Apne' in 1971  and it was debut film of Gulzar as a director.Meena Kumari,Shatrughan Sinha,Vinod Khanna acted in Key roles of  Mere Apne.Sumita Sanyal portrayed character  'Lata' in this film  who is wife of character  Arun Gupta , handled by actor Ramesh Deo.
The Bengali film 'Nayak' was directed by Satyajit Ray in 1966 in which Uttam Kumar and Sharmila Tagore were in the main lead.In this critically acclaimed film Sumita Sanyal acted in the role as 'Promila Chatterjee'.
Sanjev Kumar and Sumita Sanyal were the main lead of Bollywood film 'Ashirwad' directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee in 1968.Ashok Kumar also handled pivotal character in this film.It highlighted the story of a man of high principles and his love towards his daughter.
'Anand' released in 1971 is  a film which has been ranked among the 'Top 25 Must see Bollywood Films' by 'Indian Times Movies' and considered as the best film of Rajesh Khanna.
Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan acted in pivotal roles in this film in which Sumita Sanyal acted opposite Amitabh Bacchan.Amitabh Bachchan portrayed Dr.Bhaskar, a Cancer specialist who  has close friendship with a cheerful person 'Anand' .The amazing fact is







that Anand is a  dying Cancer patient who is well aware of his condition.Anand spreads joy of light in the Doctor's life by helping him to unite with his love 'Renu(Sumita Sanyal) and finally Anand dies.
This film won National film Award as Best feature film in Hindi of 1971.
It won Filmfare Best Movie Award of 1972,Filmfare Best Actor Award for Rajesh Khanna,Best Dialogues Award for Gulzar,Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for Amitabh Bacchan,Filmfare Best Story award for Hrishikesh Mukherjee  etc.
This film was later remade in Malayalam as 'Chitrasalbham' in which Jayaram and Biju Menon handled the main roles and directed by K.B.Madhu.

Sumita Sanyal acted in a Hindi movie 'Atmadaan' in 1989 in which Abhi Battacharya,Rameswari etc acted but the film was not released.

'Anjane Mehman' was another Hindi film she acted in 1990 in which Samit Bhanja,Jeevan,Padma Devi etc acted.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee Produced and directed 'Guddi', a Bollywood movie in 1971 which earned accolades and it was a comedy-Drama in which Dharmendra and Jaya Bachchan handled main roles.Some other prominent actors appeared  in guest roles in this film.Utpal Dutt acted in this film as 'Professor Gupta'.
In 1996 she acted in a Hindi TV movie 'The peacock spring'.
