ZOHRA SEHGAL

The Grand Lady of Indian Theatre and Cinema, Zohra Sehgal has celebrated her 102nd Birthday on 27th April 2014 with relatives ,friends and well wishers.
She is reputed Film and Stage actress as well as renowned dancer and choreographer.Her real name is 'Zahibzadi Zohra Begum Mumtaz-Ullah Khan' and was born on 27 April 1912 in Rampur,Uttar Pradesh.
After her studies at Queen Mary's College at Lahore, she intended to take acting career.She witnessed a ballet of Pioneer of Modern Dance  Uday Shanker which very much impressed her and so joined his group.With that troupe she travelled to many foreign countries like Japan,Europe and America.During this period she met Kamaleshwar Sehgal who was a scientist and dancer.He was ten years younger to her and was a Hindu.They loved each other and in 1942 she married him despite the barrier of age and religion.Kamaleswar Sehgal later became an art director and tried his hand at direction also.
Later she joined Prithviraj Theatres as a stage actress where her sister Uzra Butt was already a member and worked there for sixteen years.At the same time she portrayed secondary roles in several films like 'Neecha Nagar, Dharti ke Lal,Kalpana' etc and also choreographed for films like 'CID,Baazi,Nau Do Gyarah, and a dream scene of film 'Aawara' etc.
After the demise of her husband she shifted to England since she got a dram scholarship.There she appeared in many British Television series like 'A Jewel in the Crown, Tandoori Nights' and also in some films.She lived in England for about 25 years and returned to India.
Zohra Sehgal continued to act in films and on stage in suitable roles like Grandmother.She received accolades for portrayal of characters in plays like 'Ek Thi Naani',  'The spirit of Anne Frank' etc.
She is honoured with 'Padma Vibhushan Award' from Government of India and also recipient of Sangeet Natak Academy Award.
She lives in South Delhi with her daughter Kiran Sehgal.
