SHALINI AND SHAMILI

The south Indian film goers   were highly delighted to experience
the acting talents of Baby Shalini in 1983 in the film 'Ente Mamattikuttiammakku' and her younger sister Baby Shamily years later in the film 'Malootty'.
They were very cute babies  and excelled fantastically well to the astonishment of the spectators.To
understand the situation of the sequence in childhood  and to perform it in front of the whole
film unit members was a special blessing of God itself.For example Shalini gets the main credit
of the film 'Ente Mamattikutty Ammakku' which was directed by Fazil in 1983 when Shalini
would be only three years of age.The perception of the character was superb  and she got
Kerala State Award  for Best Child artist.
Thereafter she was frequently appearing in several Malayalam,Tamil and Telugu films in
important roles as a child artist.She got  Andhapradesh State award for child artist
for the film Brahmaputrudu.
Shalini was born on 20 Nov at Chennai to parents Sharaf Babu and Alice Sharaf Babu.Even









 though she was busy with her films then also she continued with her studies.She was a student at Adarsh Vidyalaya,Chennai during her 9th and 10th standards.She studied in another school at Chennai for 11th and 12th class.She finished 2nd year B.B.A course of Anna Malai
University also.
Shalini was engaged as a child artist during the period 1983 to 1990 and afterwards she took
a break for her studies and again appeared as  heroine in the film 'Aniyathi Pravu' which was

directed by Fazil and Produced by Appachan of Navodaya  Studio in 1997.She continued acting in lead roles till her marriage in 2001. Shalini had  debuted as a child artist in the film Mamattikutty Ammakku which was also  under the same team of Appachan and Fazil.
Aniyathi Pravu was a blockbuster film which was a box office hit in which the Kunchakko
Boban-Shalini pair was very much liked by the audience and  the same pair was utilized 
for other Malayalam films 'Prem poojari' and  'Niram' which all earned critical acclaim and
were all big hits also.
In the musical romantic film Aniyathi Pravu Thilakan,Innocent,Jnardhanan,KPAC Lalitha,
Sreevidya etc acted.Sudheesh impressed  the audience by his role as 'Radha Madhavan'.

In the Mammootty film 'Kaliyoonjal' directed by 'Anil Babu' Shalini acted as the sister of Mammootty and as an epilepsy patient.She  suicides  in the picture after becoming the
mother of a child leaving the child in her brother's hands because of the tragic death of
her husband.
'Niram' was a colorful college campus musical film directed by Kamal.Jomol,Boban Alummoodan,KPAC Lalitha,Lalu Alex,Prem Prakash etc acted in that film along with
Shalini and Kunchacko Boban.The film earned good response from the audience and
 director Kamal himself remade it in Tamil in the name 'Piriyadhe Varam Vendum'.

In the Tamil version also Shalini was in the main female role .Krishna,Manivannan,Manorama,Ambika etc acted in the film.
Tamil film 'Amarkalam' was an action film of Shalini and Ajith and was  directed by Saran.

'Alaipayudhe' was Mani Ratnam film which was a romantic drama film which  received
much accolades from critics and spectators.It was shown at Berlin International festival in 2001
and later shown in several National and Int'l film festivals.It was  remade in Hindi as 'Saathiya' starring Rani Mukherjee and  Vivek Oberoi.
'Amudhe' was directed by 'Jeeva' in which Jagapati Raju,Akkineni Nagarjuna,Shalini,Sreevidya,Manivannan,Abbas etc acted.It was the remake of Hindi film 'Deewangee'.
Shalini and Shamili's brother Richard is also an established actor of Tamil films.
Shalini married actor Ajith in 2001  and now they are  leading a happy life and  as a house wife and the mother of
a cute baby girl Shalini is quite busy.
Shamili also gained the love and admiration of millions as a child artist. In the film 'Malootty'which was directed by Bharathan, Shamily 
at the age of two  presented extraordinary talent in  acting  with Jayaram and Urvashy.The child
 falling in to a deep pit in a hotel yard and the task of  rescuing her was the theme.The small
child patiently co-operating with the film unit was  incredible.
She presented unusual talent in presenting the role  of a mentally challenged child 'Anjali'
in the film 'Anjali' which was directed by Mani Ratnam and bagged National award for Best
Child artist.
She also appeared in several films as a  child artist and took long break for her studies later  but
appeared as younger sister of Mammootty and Mohan Lal in 'Hari Krishnans' in 1998 as
a teen age girl.
She is now  acting in a Telugu  film 'Oy' in the directional debut of 'Anand Ranga' and the movie will be
 releasing on July 3. This is the debut film of Shamily as a heroine and she is the latest upcoming heroine in the south and critics  are sure that she will  win
the hearts of all film lovers.

KANAKA DURGA AND RAJAKOKILA

Kanaka Durga and Raja Kokila are South Indian actresses who were very active in the 70's
Manasi and Kanaka Durga
but left the arena during early  80's by getting married.
Kanaka Durga acted in more films than Raja Kokila and she  was mainly a Malayalam film actress even though she hails from Andhra Pradesh.
Kanaka Durga belongs to a family which is having  connection to the artistic field and so from
the childhood itself Kanaka Durga was interested to join films.She was not interested for higher 
studies  after schooling. Once   film director K.Viswanath came to their residence to see
her grandfather who was his friend and she understood that he  was in search for a suitable location for his next Telugu
film.Kanaka Durga was sixteen years old at that time and she requested K.Viswanath a role
in his film which he sanctioned and she debuted  in a small role with Sobhan Babu in the next film
of director k.Viswanath .Expecting more roles in other South Indian languages she shifted to
Chennai.There she was not lucky enough to get offers as expected in films but she got chances
to act in stage plays.During a small period itself she gained name and fame as an efficient
actress on professional drama stage.
When director Ramu Kariat was  in search for a new face for his big budget Malayalam  film 'Nellu' he
came to know about Kanaka Durga and he selected her for the role of 'Kurumatty' a notable
role in that film.The film which told the story of 'Adiyar community, a tribal group of  Wynadu 
of  Kerala was written by P.Valsala.The film contained beautiful songs composed by Salil Choudhary and one of the songs was sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Balu Mhendra debuted as cinematographer in this film which was a blockbuster film and box office hit.Kanka Durga danced in this film singing a song 'Kalyana Prayathil pennungal choodunna' and she received accolades for her character Kurumatty.
Kanaka Durga was then accepted by Malayalam film industry as a supporting actress.She was heroine in some films also like in 'Mazhakkaru' opposite Madhu and which was directed by 
P.N.Menon.She was also heroine in some films of M.G.Soman and Jayan.
She acted in a good role in 'Mohiniyattam' an award winning  film directed by Sreekumaran Thampi and in
which Lakshmi was the heroine.Like that she was given well noted roles in film 'Sikharangal'
directed by actress Sheela and 'Uthradarathri' an award winning film of Balachandra Menon.
Her role in 'Etho Oru Swapnam'  as well as 'Theekkanal' also received accolades.Theekkanal
was a super hit film which was directed by Madhu and acted as hero and Mohan was the 
brother-in-law of Madhu in the film.Kanaka Durga's sequences  as the representative of a big Company trying to 
seduce Mohan for the business benefits of her company was very much appreciated by the
audience.
While on the sets of film 'Uthradarathri' she met cinematographer Hemachandran  and fell
in love with him.She got married to him and they  were living happily and peacefully till his death
in 2001.The South Indian film actress 'Manasi' who was the heroine in Malayalam film
'Big B' is Kanaka Durga's daughter.Manasi married Tamil film actor 'Vikrant'.
Kanaka Durga has acted in  Lohita Das film 'Soothradharan' after a big gap.

RAJAKOKILA
Raja Kokila  used to act in Tamil films when she got chance in Malayalam films and acted 
in some films during 70's.
Film 'Ganga' is a Tamil film released in 1972 which was directed by Karnan in which Jai Shankar was the hero.Raja Kokila was given a role in that film.
In 1972 again in a Jai Shankar film 'Jakkamma' she had a noted role.In 1975  in a Jay Shankar and Siva Kumar film 'Enga Pattan Sothu' she acted and in 1980 film 'Jambu'
also she was having a notable role.
In the 1974 Malayalam  film 'Durga' which was produced and directed by Kunchacko  which dealt with
the story of Circus artiste's life written by N.Govindan Kutty, she was given a role.
In the Malayalam film 'Sandhya Mayungum Neram' in which Bharat Gopi and Jayabharathi
acted in lead roles Raja Kokila acted.
In the 1976 film 'Chottanikkara Amma' which was a super hit film directed by Mani she
acted in a nice role.The film in which Sreevidya,Vincent,Unnimary,Sobha,Sreelatha
Ravi Menon etc acted was a huge success in the box office and the song 'Manussu manassinte kathil rahasyangal manthrikkum madhuvidhu rathri' was  a super hit song which is still popular..
In the year 1977 she acted in a film 'Penpuli' which was also directed by Mani and Adoor Bhasi,K.P.A.C.Lalitha,Vincent ,Unnimary etc acted and was written by Jagathy N.K.Achary.
She  left the film field marrying a film director.

SRIDEVI

Sridevi is one of the very best actresses  Of  India who   rose to stardom in the late
70's and could win the love and appreciation from a large mass of people by acting in different
languages such as Tamil,Telugu,Hindi,Malayalam and Kannada up to early 90's.
Sridevi was born on 13 Aug 1963 to parents Ayyappan and Rajeswari in Sivakasi of Tamil Nadu State.Her father was a lawyer.
She debuted at the age of 4 as a child artist in the Tamil film 'Kandan Karunai' as Lord Muruga.
From there on wards  she could act as child artist in a large number of films in Tamil,Malayalam and Telugu.
She was given Kerala Government Best Child artist award for her performance in the 1970
film 'Poompatta'.
Her appearance as Lord Muruga in the 1969 Malayalam film 'Kumara Sambavam' was also
very much appreciated.
Sridevi acted as heroine in several Malayalam films  when she was only thirteen
or fourteen years old.
In 1976 'Abhinandanam' directed by I.V. Sasi earned her accolades and again in 1977 I.V.Sasi
films 'Alinganam' and 'Aashirvadam' were successful films in which Kamal Hassan was the hero
and Sridevi the heroine.Adoor Bhasi directed a film in 1977 in the name 'Adyapadham' in which
Kamal Hassan was the hero and heroine was Sridevi.P.G.Viswambharan directed a film in 1977

with Sridevi and Kamal Hassan in lead roles in the name 'Sathyavan Savitri' which contained beautiful songs and song sequences and the film was a grand success.Like that during that period her

 films'Thulavarsham,Nalumani Pookkal, Oonjal,Nirakudam etc all earned good opinion.
In Tamil she became heroine in K.Balanchander film 'Moondru Mudichu' in 1976 opposite
Kamal Hassan and Rajani Kanth.She appeared continuously with Kamal Hassan in successful









 films like 'Guru,Sankarlal,Thayillamal Naan Illai,Meendum Kokila,Vazhve Mayam,Varumayin Niram Sivappu,Neela Malargal,Moondram Pirai, and 16 Vayathinile.With Rajani Kanth she
acted in films like Gayathri,Dharma Yudham,Priya,Johnny,Pokkiri Raja,Nan Adimai illai etc.

At the same time she could act in several blockbuster Telugu films with eminent actors,directors and producers of that language.
For example  in 'Bobbili Puli' N.T.Rama Rao was her hero and it was directed by Dasari

 Narayana Rao.NTR acted as a Military Officer in that film.
1979 film 'Karthika Deepam' was a film of Shobhan Babu in which Sharada also acted.
1988 film 'Aakhari Poratam'  was a film of Akkineni Nageswara Rao and directed by

 Raghavendra Rao.
1990 film 'Jagadela Veeradu Athiloka Sundari' was a Chiranjeevi film.It was dubbed as 
'Aadmi aur Apsara' in Hindi, 'Hai Sundari' in Malayalam, 'Kadhal Devathai' in Tamil. It is

one of the best movies of Chiranjeevi and Sridevi.
'Guru' was a Tamil film of 1980 directed by I.V.Sasi in which Kamal Hassan,Sridevi,Muthu
 Raman,and M.N.Nambiar acted in key roles.The film earned critical and commercial acclaim.


'Moondram Pirai' was a superhit film directed by Balu Mahendra.Kamal Hassan was the hero in it.It was dubbed in the name 'Vasantha Kokila'  in Telugu and released along with

Tamil on the same day.That film was remade in Hindi as 'Sadma' later.Kamal Hassan won
National award as best actor for this film.A dance sequence with Silk Smita earned accolades
for both Kamal and Smita.
Sridevi debuted as heroine in Bollywood with the  film 'Sola Savan' but rose to stardom in 1983 with the
film 'Himmatwala'.Jeetendra and Sridevi presented fantastic dancing sequences using

beautiful elaborate sets in that film.Again with Jeetendra she had hits 'Tohfa,Mawaali,Justice Chowdhari etc.'Karma,Aakhree Rasta,Nagina etc established her stardom.Her dancing
skill was utilized and very much appreciated in several films.

Science fiction super hero film of Anil Kapoor 'Mr.India, 'Chandini' directed by Yash Chopra

in 89 starring Rishi Kapoor,Vinod Khanna etc,Rajani Kanth, Sunney Deol film 'Chaal Baaz'
etc are all films need special mention.
Sridevi Married 'Boney Kapoor' who is elder brother of Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor.

In 1996 director Bharathan presented a beautiful Malayalam film 'Devaragam' in which
Aravind Swamy was the hero.There were  nice dance sequences in that film.
In 1981 Sridevi got Nandi award as best actress for film 'kshana kshanam'.
She got Tamil Nadu State Government award as best actress for film 'Moondram Pirai' in 82.
She got Filmfare award for best actress in the years 1982,1990,1991 and 1992.
She is recipient of Tamil Nadu Government 'Kalaimamani Award'.
In 1992 she received Kala Saraswathi Award from Government of Andhra Pradesh.

SAIRA BANU

Saira Banu, the Bollywood actress who was in the forefront in 60's 70's and 80's is not active at present 
in films but leading a happy life with her husband yesteryear hero of Bollywood films 'Dilip Kumar'.
Sair Banu was born on Aug 23 1944  to 30's and 40's actress Naseem Banu and film producer Mian Ehsan -Ul-Haq.Her father produced film 'Phool' in Bombay and Produced 'Wadah' in Pakistan.
She had spent significant part of her childhood in London and went to a finishing school there.She was an acclaimed actress in her school and obtained awards there to.
She was only 17 when she debuted in Hindi films.Her appearance in Shammi Kapoor film
'Junglee' of 1961 gave her tremendous boost and a firm basement for growth as an able heroine.




She was not having knowledge of classical dancing which she started to study and soon earned
fame as a good Bharatanatyam and kathak dancer which helped her to earn more roles in films
than anticipated.
The 1968 film Padosan was very much acclaimed in which Suni Dutt and Mehmood acted
which was a comedy entertainer.
The 1969 film 'Aadmi aur Insan' directed by Yash Chopra and produced by B.R.Chopra was an exceptionally good film .Dharmendra,Feroz Khan, Saira Banu and mumtaz were in important roles.
'Purab and Paschim' produced and directed by Manoj Kumar and acted by Ashok Kumar,Manoj Kumar,Saira Basnu,Pran,Madan Chopra and Vinod Khanna uplifted patriotism 
and was a nice film.
The 1970 film 'Gopi' directed by A.Bhimsingh in which Dilip Kumar,Saira Banu,Pran,Farida Jalal,Johnny Walker etc acted earned good opinion.Dilip Kumar as 'Gopiram' and Saira Banu
as 'Seema' received appreciation for their efforts.
Victoria 203, the film which dealt with the story of diamond robbery was a success in which 
Saira Banu excelled well as rider of the Horse carriage.This 1972 film was starred by Ashok Kumar, Saira Banu,Pran,Navin Nischal,Ranjeet,etc.
'Pocket Maar' was a 1974 film in which Dharmendra and Mehmood acted with her which was a
comedy entertainer.
'Sagina' and 'Bairag'  were again good films with Dilip Kumar.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 'Chaitali' was also a well acclaimed film.She appeared  lastly
in the film 'Faisala' of 1988.

ZARINA WAHAB

Zareena Wahab is an Indian actress who could portray any type of characters with extreme
acting talents.She was trained from the prestigious Film and T.V. Institute atPune which is governed by Government of India and was of the  1973 batch.
After coming out of the Institute she could act in a film of Dev Anand 'Ishq Ishq Ishq' in 1974
with Dev Anand and Zeenat Aman but as if a star near the  Full moon her presence was not
noted and felt.
Next year in 1975 she could act in a film 'Anokha'.
In the year 1976 a film 'Chit Chor' was released all over India which was produced by 'Rajashree Productions', the production house which always promoted fantastic artistic films only.
'Chit Chor' means one who stole the heart and it was true in the case of the pair 'Amol Palekar and Zarina Wahab' that they literally stole the heart of all Indians by that film.The director and 
other technicians have their contributions for that achievement.But the natural way of acting
displayed by both Amol Palekar and Zarina Wahab were  very much appreciated.There was one
more person who stole the hearts of millions of Indians through the film 'Chit Chor' none other than the pride of Kerala Shri.K.J.Yesudas.All the songs of this picture which the music composed by Ravindra Jain are  having charismatic qualities that  they are still enjoyed by a large
mass of people.
In 1977 Zarina Wahab was very much lucky to act with M.G.R. for his film 'Nava Rathinam' in 
which nine heroines appeared in that.The film was directed by A.P.Nagarajan and was a super
duper hit.
In  1978 she had a film with 'Sanjeev Kumar' which was a well noted film of director Basu Chatterjee in the name 'Tumhare Liye'
In 1979 she appeared in a Malayalam film 'Madanolsavam' which was directed by N.Sankaran Nair in which Kamal Hassan was the hero.This charismatic film with the fine photography and
beautiful location,excellent acting skills presented by all actors especially Kamal Hassan and
Zarina, fantastic melodious songs composed by Salil Dada all made it a celebration by Malayalis.
In 1979 she  had to her credit one more super hit film 'Sawan ko Aane Do'.
The director who made a new path of film making 'Bharathan' who possessed a brilliant
vision and look out utilized Zarina Wahab for his 1980 Malayalam  film 'Chamaram' and 1981 film 'Palangal'.Both those films in which Nedumudi Venu was in key roles received accolodes






and good opinions from critics of course  for Zarina also.

In 81 , 82  and 85 she appeared in several pictures in Malayalam like,Sara Varsham,Enthino Pookkunna Pookkal,Manassariyathe,Punnaram Cholli Cholli etc.Out of these the romance
of Rahman and Zarina Wahab in 'Punnaram Cholli Cholli' directed by Priya Darshan was
quite interesting.
In 2009 she appeared in a Malayalam  film calendar and in 2010 she acted in another  Malayalam film 'Aagathan'.It was directed by Kamal and Dilip was the hero.
She could act in the blockbuster film of 2010 'My name is Khan' in which the one and only 'Sharukh Khan' was the hero   and  she also exhibited fantastic acting skill along with him.
She made her presence strongly felt in the 2010  Malayalam film 'Aadaminte Makan Abu'
which earned National award for Best actor for 'Salim Kumar'.
In 2012 she acted in the film 'Agneepath' in which Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra acted in Main roles.
Zarina Wahab was born in Visakhapattanam in a Muslim family on 17 July 1959.Let us
hope for many more excellent contributions from her.
