Rakhee Mazumdar Gulzar donned several unforgettable characters in Bollywood films  in lead roles and supporting roles for a long span of about four decades in perfect finesse.
She was born in Ranaghat of West Bengal on India's independence day, 15
August 1947.
Rakhee's family were living in the Eastern  part of Bengal where East Pakisthan was formed on Partition and they moved to West Bengal when Partition took place.
In her teen age she was married to a Bengali film director 'Ajay Biswas' which lasted for a short period only.
In 1967 she acted in a Bengali film 'Badhu Baron' which received much critical acclaim and her acting skill was noted by Bollywood actors like Sunil Kumar and top line   directors of Bollywood also.
Thus she got roles in Hindi films and a film produced by  Rajashri productions in the name 'Jeevan Mrityu' was released in 1970 with Dharmendra in lead role.The film was  super hit and she became an established  actress of Bollywood.
She earned much name and  fame by the 1971 blockbuster super hit film 'Sharmeelee' with
Shashi Kapoor.This pair was liked by the audience and she was cast in nine films opposite Shashi Kapoor out of which five were box office success while the other four earned critical acclaim.
With Amitabh Bachachan she paired in several pictures which were mostly
blockbuster films and smash hits.Their romantic pair was extremely lovable
in several films like "Kabhi Kabhie,Kasme Vaade,Muquader ka Sikkander,
Trishul,Kaala Pathar" etc.While acting as love pair of Amitabh Bachchan she 
did not hesitate to act as his  sister-in-law or even as his mother in films like "Shaan,Shakti and Lawaris".That is the
dedication she has shown as an actress and it is known widely that she was
selective about  her films and characters.Rakhee did not try to increase the number of films but to act in good films and to  create good impression as a versatile actress by selecting appropriate roles.
Towards the mid of 80's she used to play elderly supporting roles mostly as affectionate mother  which were 
also excellent like in the film 'Ram Lakhan', 'Khal Nayak'  'Karan Arjun' 'Baadshah' etc.
Rakhee occasionally appeared in some Bengali films and earned appreciation
from Bengali viewers too.She got National film award as supporting actress for Bengali film 'Subho  Mahurat'
The success of 'Sharmeelee' helped her to achieve the position as one of the
top heroines of Bollywood.That film contained nice songs.
'Reshma Aur Shera' was Sunil Dutt's production in which Sunil Dutt was the hero and
Waheeda Rehman was equally in an important role as Rakhee.Amitabh Bachchan also
acted in it and it was the first   film of  Sanjay Dutt who appeared  in a small role.Music director Jaidev got National award for this film.
In the year 1972 Rakhee had successful films with Shashi Kapoor and Rajesh 
The 1973 film 'Heera Panna' of Dev Anand was a huge success.Zeenat Aman
was also having equally important  role as Rakhee in the film which dealt with a theme of 'Diamond' robbery.The songs and sequences were brilliant.
'Daag' was a fantastic film for which the director Yash Chopra received Filmfare Best director award and Rakhee Best Supporting actress award.Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore were in lead roles in this film.
Film 'Tapasya' earned National award as 'Best Popular film providing wholesome entertainment'.
'Kabhi Kabhie' of 1976 earned tremendous success critically and financially.
Amitabh Bachchan,Shashi Kapoor,Rishi Kapoor,Rakhee,Neetu Singh,Simi Garewal,Parikshit Sahni etc acted in it.Filmfare award was given for Lyricist,Singer and Music director for this film.
In 1978 film 'Trishna' of Sanjeev Kumar,Shashi Kapoor was box office hit and   accomplishment of
character 'Aarti Gupta' was nicely done by Rakhee.

'Trishul' of 1978 in which Amitabh,Sanjeev Kumar,Shashi Kapoor,Rakhee,Hema Malini,Waheeda Rehman,Poonam Dhillon etc acted and Musical hit Muquadar ka Sikkander which was  the second biggest  hit of the decade, were all huge success and unforgettable nice films.
Yash Chopra's 'Kaala Pathar', Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 'Jurmana'  Sanjeev Kumar film 'Shriman Shrimati' etc were all films which received  accolades.
Rakhee married  well renowned lyricist,writer and film director 'Gulzar' but they
were separated after the birth of their daughter Meghna Gulzar.The child was
with Gulzar and she graduated in film making from a University in US.She directed films like 'Just Married' 'Dus Kahaniyaan" etc.She authored the Biography of her father, 'Gulzar' in 2004.
Rakhee received  Filmfare supporting actress awards for films 'Daag' and 'Ram Lakhan'.She got Best actress Filmfare award for 'Tapasya'.In 1974 she got
National film award which was  special souvenir for her role in '27 Down'.
She got National film award  for Supporting actress for Bengali film 'Subho Mahurat'.
In 2003 she received 'Padma Shri' Award from Government of India.
