Sharmila Tagore was very cute and charming at the height of her fame as the heroine of Bollywood,   and Bengali films in her youth.She is still active in films by appearing in supporting roles,elderly roles etc.
She was born in 1946 in a Bengali Hindu family at  Hyderabad  to Gitindranath Tagore who was General Manager of Elgin Mills.She is the great grand niece of Nobel Prize winner-Indian
Poet- Rabindranath Tagore.
She entered film industry through Bengali film of Sathyajit Ray's  'Apur Sansar' and acted in as the ill fated 
wife of   title character 'Apu'.She had acted in some other Bengali films also before debuting  in Hindi film in 1964 like the film 'Devi' in which she acted opposite Soumitra Chatterjee.Shakti Samanta introduced her in 'Kashmir ki Kali' opposite Shammi Kapoor which was a success.
In 1966 Sharmila and Dharmendra appeared together in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 'Anupama'
Shakti Samanta utilized the winning pair Shammi and Sharmila in the film 'An Evening in Paris' which the production and direction was vested on him.In that film Sharmila made history by appearing in a 'bikini'.The film was a grand success.Pran acted as villain in this film.
'Satyakam' was a critically acclaimed film of 1969 in which Dharmendra,Sharmila Tagore,Ashok Kumar and Sanjeev Kumar acted.The film which was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee received good opinion.
1969 film 'Aradhana' was a blockbuster film of  the pair Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore.
It was produced and directed by Shakti Samanta and Sharmila received the first Filmfare 
award as the Best Actress for this film.It was dubbed in to Bengali and was a success there also.It was remade in Tamil as 'Sivakamiyin Selvan'(74) and in to Telugu as 'Kannavari Kalavu'(74).The songs composed by S.D.Burman mesmerized the audiences.
1970 film 'Safar' of  Rajesh Khanna-Sharmila Tagore was another super hit film.Ashok Kumar and Feroz Khan were also in that film in prime roles.
Chhoti Bahu directed by K.B.Tilak was based on a  Bengali Novel written by 'Saratchandra Chatterjee' in which again Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila were the pair.
The winning pair Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila acted in 'Daag' which was  directed and
Produced by Yash Chopra in 1973 turned to be a big success at the box office.It was the first

film production of Yash Chopra.Rakhee who acted in this picture won her first Filmfare award.The film was remade in Telugu as 'Vichitra Jeevitham'(78).
'Mausam' directed by 'Gulzar' and produced by P.Mallikarjuna Rao was a fantastic film for
which Sharmila Tagore received National Award  as  Best Actress.The film bagged National
award for second Best feature film.Sanjeev Kumar was the hero in this film.Filmfare Best
Movie award and Filmfare Best Director award was for film 'Mausam'.
'Amanush' of 1975 was made in both Hindi and Bengali in which Uttam Kumar and Sharmila 
acted as pair.It was produced and directed by Shakti Samanta.Bengali version gained much
popularity and was a smash hit.
Film 'Namkeen' directed by Gulzar in 1982 was an emotional film which showed the rural
life  of a  poor mother and her three young girls in which Sharmila and Sanjeev kumar were
in the lead.Shabana Aazmi,Waheeda Rehman were also in key roles.The story was by 
'Samrah Basu' who won Filmfare award for Best story.
In the 2005 film 'Virudh' Amitabh Bachchan and Sharmila acted as pair.Sanjay Dutt and
John Abraham acted  important roles in this film.
Sharmila Tagore is still appearing in supporting roles and elderly roles.
Sharmila Tagore   Married Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, the Nawab of Pataudi and former Captain of the Indian Cricket Team in 1969.They have three Children.Son Saif Ali Khan is a famous Bollywood Actor.Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi Passed away in the year 2011.
She was Chairperson of Indian Film Censor Board from 2004 to 2011.
In 2005 she was chosen as an UNICEF  Goodwill Ambassador.
In 1969 she received Filmfare Best Actress Award for 'Aradhana'
In 1976 she received National Award for Best Actress -Film 'Mausam'
In 1997 she received Filmfare Lifetime Achievement  Award.
In 2002 she received Star Screen Lifetime Achievement Award
In 2004 she received National Award for Best Supporting Actress -Film "Abar Aranye'
