Asha Parekh became heroine in 1959 of  Bollywood films  by  a Shammi Kapoor film 'Dil Deke Dekho'
and captured the hearts of millions of film viewers from there on for another three decades.
In the 80's and up to mid of 90's mostly she appeared in supporting roles.
Asha Parekh was born on 2nd Oct 1942  in a Gujarati family at  Bangalore .Her father was a  Hindu and Mother
Muslim.She was  the single child for her parents.She was trained in dance from childhood and
she performed dances on stages.
She was cast as a child artist in the film 'Aasman' in 1952 at the age of 12.Afterwards also she
appeared as a child artist in some other films.
In 1959 she became a heroine in Dil Deke Dekho which was a success and she got opportunities
in other films continuously and selected acting as her career.
Her mentor was Nasir Hussain who made her a heroine for the first time  and in several of his films she presented  extravagantly  fanciful appearances of  unmemorable characters 
 like  " Jab pyar kisi se hota hai, Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon,Teesri Manzil,Pyar ka Mousam" etc.
She was equally good in presenting glamorous roles and serious roles."Do Badan,Chirag,Main
Tulsi Tere Angan Mein" are all films of  serious roles.
!960 film 'Hum Hundustani' was directed by Ram Mukherjee and  she acted opposite Sunil Dutt.This was the first film of Sanjeev Kumar.
Chhaya of 1961 was also a nice film of Sunil Dutt  directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
1964 film 'Ziddi' opposite Joy Mukherjee earned much appreciation from the audience and it was the fourth grosser of the year.
Teesri Manzil earned much accolades and it was  one of the best films of Shammi Kapoor.
1966 film 'Love in Tokyo' starring Joy Mukherjee,Asha parekh,Pran,Mehboob etc was a super duper hit which was directed by Pramod Chakravarty.The film contained attractive songs 
composed by Shankar Jaikishan which are still very popular like "Sayonara Sayonara, Japan
Love in Tokyo" etc.
1969 film 'Pyar ka Mousam' written,  produced and directed by Nasir Hussain earned wide
accolades from critics and viewers.It was a grand success at the Box Office.The story was as
usual members of a family getting separated and reuniting at the end.
'Chirag' starring Sunil Dutt,'Mahal' starring Dev Anand,'Do Badan' starring Manoj Kumar,'Naya Raasta' of Jeetendra are all well acclaimed films of Asha Parekh.
'Kati Patang' directed by Sakti Samant in 1970 was a super duper hit in which Asha Parekh
presented nice acting pretending as a widow.She received filmfare Best actress award for

this film.Her character 'Madhavi' who was an orphan got nice opinion from critics.
'Aan Milo Sajna' of 1970 in which she acted with Rajesh Khanna was another super duper
hit which contained nice songs.
Caravan of Nasir hussain in which Jeetendra was in lead male role was also a hit movie.Asha
Bhosle received filmfare award as Best playback singer for the song 'Piya to Ab To Aaja'.
R.D.Burman bagged filmfare award for best Music Director for this film.
In the film 'Mein Tulsi Tere Angon Mein' won filmfare award as best film.Asha Parekh
was supporting actress in this film.Heroine 'Nutan' was given best actress award by filmfare.
In 1990 Asha Parekh became a  Gujarati T.V. serial director by directing the serial 'Jyoti'.
Later she produced and directed several T.V.Serials "palash ke Phool, Kora Kagaz" etc and
a comedy serial 'Dal Mein Kaala'.
She served as Chairperson of Central Film Censor Board  and President of Cine Artist's
She has also acted in three Gujarati  films,some Punjabi films and a Kannada film.
She runs a dance school in the name 'Kala Bhavan' in Mumbai.
Allahabad Sangeet Natak Academy bestowed her 'Nritya Shiromani' award.
She received filmfare lifetime achievement award in 2002.
She received Int'l Indian film academy award in 2006.
She received the living legend award  from the federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce
and Industry.
